George and I have never been much into the costume world ourselves, but ever since Smallie, Smallie 2.0 (and the furry smallie siblings that preceded them) came into our lives, we can’t imagine a Halloween without fully immersing ourselves… as a family. Or what has eventually evolved into what we like to call, Fam-o-ween.
Along the way, we’ve managed to up our game, seeing as we have to keep things relatively interesting for the smallest member of the family. And I don’t mean this guy…
Or this guy…
Or these two guys…
It was by the influence of a wee little black swan bearing a striking resemblance to Awww-Drey Hepburn, that came into this world and forever changed the face of Halloween as far as our little family was concerned. And her name is Smallie.
It took his mini-version to plead with her otherwise skeptical and ever-so resistant Daddy, to get into the Halloween spirit as a family. Of course, the hubs has one stipulation for agreeing to support this absurd annual tradition of ours (although I’m working on his willingness to be flexible for the sake of the incredibly persistent women in his life) – to dress up as a respectable, somewhat stylish (I believe his exact words were… “You better not make me look tacky”), human character. So I guess, an emoji, fruit of the loom grapes, a bright red lego piece, or a gigantic cabbage patch doll with yarn for hair, is pretty much out of the question. Boo.
8 years later Smallie 2.0, entered the scene. With Little Mama‘s insane DIY skills and highly influenced ways of Super Monsters and all things Cleopatra, Mini Cleo and Mini Tut took Halloween by storm. (Get the deets here on how we encourage our littles to create their own costumes, cuz I’m not about to add another thing to my list – let’s not be talking crazy, now…)
Allow me to take you down memory lane as we revisit Fam-o-ween (s) of yore:
“Cops, Robbers, & A Small(ie) Moneybag” – Fam-O-Ween, 2011 (Click here to get the deets)
“Peanuts! Popcorn! Hot Dog!!” – Fam-O-Ween, 2012 <as featured on The Huffington Post> (Click here to get the deets)
“Hollywood Starlets” – Fam-O-Ween, 2013 (Click here to get the deets)
“Orange Is The New Black – an Original Fam-O-Ween Series” – Fam-O-Ween, 2014 (Click here to get the deets)
Of course, Smallie got her own feature as Crazy Eyes, toddler version…
“The Mini Green Hornet” – Fam-O-Ween, 2015 (Click here to get the deets)
“Mary Poppins” – Fam-O-Ween, 2016 (Click here to get the deets)
Apparently, her nanny service reviews were off the charts and out of this world…
“The Beatles” – Fam-O-Ween, 2017 (Click here to get the deets)
Of course you can’t pretend you’re The Beatles without actually walking in their shoes, can you?
OR coming out with our own album…
But where things started to get really crazy, was in 2018, when our tiniest and newest Smallie – our little man entered the picture (quite literally)…
“Vegas, Baby!” – Fam-O-Ween, 2018 (Click here to get the deets)
Truth is, with Mr. All Shook up over here – he Ain’t Nuthin, but a Hound Dog, Cryin’ all the Time (no joke, our Instastories captured the very loud and raw footage behind the scenes). Probably because it was more mom’s way, than My Way. A Little Less Conversation and a little more Heartbreak Hotel, as far as he was concerned. I’m surprised he didn’t start wailing Jailhouse Rock cuz we all know this was baby imprisonment at its finest.
Okay. I’ll stop.
Maybe next year, the poor little man of ours will feel less overwhelm, cry less tears, and have more Love Me Tender moments (okay, last one). At some point he’s going to have to surrender like his big sis has, with such grace may I add, and realize – this is the family he chose.
Sigh. Life as a Balino is so hard. So very, very, hard.
“Peter Pan and the Lost Balinos” – Fam-O-Ween, 2019 (Click here to get the deets)
Now that we’re parents, I can see the thrill of never wanting to grow up, and the creative genius behind such a concept (Hence, G-Darling, and Wend-D Darling…. yes I know – me, and my puns). But like anything in the mystical world of pretend – it’s not always what it’s cracked up to be. This past year in particular, we have embraced all the changes and faced all the challenges arms opened wide with eyes closed shut. But as much as we have learned, in every which way as parents – we are lost. And we’re just finding our way through this chaos called parenthood.

2020. Need I say more?
Last year, we decided to take the time to embrace the weirdness that 2020 left us, and go figure… we ended up discovering our true selves.
… creepy and kooky.
… mysterious and spooky.
… We’re altogether ooky.
We’re The “BALINO” Family! Quarantine-version…
Can’t wait to come up with… err… show you what ideas we have brewing for 2021!
Do you get into the Halloween spirit with your little ones?
