My Tiny Royal.
As I sit here at 4:30 am witnessing the event of the year – Prince Harry marrying Meghan Markle, now Duchess of Sussex, listening to the beautiful gospel choir singing an insane rendition of “Stand By Me”, I am in complete awe. My Tiny Royal is happily asleep in her loft bed dreaming of fascinators, puppies and her little Prince of a brother to come in less than a handful of weeks. It is literally taking every single molecule in my body to stop me from waking her up to join me as I watch this historical event take place. But then, I think – it’s probably best I don’t ruin her Saturday (and coincidentally ours) by taking away hours of her sleep, essentially for my happiness.
I mean, this is the kind of happily, rested, Tiny Royal I’m talking about.
Maybe the next royal wedding, when she’s a little older and can hack a 6 hour tv special with her mommy, I’ll wake her up for an all night mommy-and-me royalty binge fest.
But I digress.
The most touching moment for me, being a mom, and a lover of all innocent things and beings (not to mention, being incredibly hormonal and immensely pregnant), was when the stunningly poised bride made her grand entrance with a group of angels following behind her. Ranging from ages 2 to 7, her tiny bridesmaids (flower girls) and page boys reminded me of my wedding day when I was accompanied by my own group of page boys, bell bearers, and flower girls – which I believe completed mine and George’s special day in a very unique way. Okay – so my mini brides maids weren’t wearing Stella McCartney or Princess Marie Chantal’s luxury formal wear (rather, my own simple tutus, and my matron of honor’s stitch work – both of which worked our great for us), but let’s face it, I’m no Duchess. We also held our wedding in a cathedral with a gospel choir and mini orchestra filling the space – so there was a lot of nostalgia watching this event. Yes – apparently I thought I was royalty back then, myself…
I think it’s wonderful to share these historical moments as they happen, with our children. Being exposed to this, not only allows them to see beyond the boundaries of their immediate surroundings, but gives them lessons about a world and culture so separate from the life they know. A union between two individuals from different parts of the world, holding such undeniable love and respect for one another and their individual traditions, was incredible to witness. Soaking in the exceptional quality of luxury fashion and art – notably Meghan Markle’s Givenchy gown, reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn’s classic style, is something we can definitely appreciate. As it’s no big secret how much our family enjoys our share of the Old Hollywood Starlets lifestyle.
I hope my Little Mama looks back at her life as a 7 year old, and remembers this moment when she and her mommy watched a beautiful royal wedding take place. Celebrating diversity both in culture and music, made this all the more momentous occasion – and a huge milestone for our world. I love that the Duchess of Sussex came from the kind of history my own little girl can relate to. Working hard, building herself up, experiencing rejection, fighting against the odds, walking the path of an activist for women, and finding incredible (and seemingly impossible) love. Forget about your everyday fairytales in her storybooks, how fun is to experience first hand, live (ish), a real life modern day fairytale with a real life Hollywood Princess? (side note: I have been a huge fan of Meghan Markle on Suits well before word got out that she and Prince Harry were an item. Seeing the cast all in attendance was pretty amazing to see as well). I am thrilled to share this moment (or at least a previously recorded version) with my little girl. My tiny royal.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, with her big smile, topped off with her fascinator and her fabulous A. Bird embroidered coat with faux fur collars, my tiny royal is ready to take on the world herself.
Share history in the making with your kids. They’ll thank you for it.
