From the day Little Mama was born – I have always dreamed of coordinating with my little mini-me (rather, Big Daddy‘s mini me). I wasn’t exactly envisioning matching Chanel purses, thigh high suede boots or something amazing… err, I mean, ridiculous like that. But creating some sort of family tradition where we do something worthy of a raised brow, something so completely weird and unique to our little family – Well, that is what we do.
Cut to Halloween, 2011.
Big Daddy has never been a fan of being featured in the crossroads of lights, camera, and action – as flawless as his hair may be on a daily basis (damn, that man of mine!). But something clicked when this little person came into our lives. We crossed the barriers. We joined her team.
We started to play.
And playing is what we do. And we do it well. I may not be Betty Crocker in the kitchen (although I do make a pretty mean spaghetti from time to time), and Big Daddy may not be your everyday Mr. Fix-it who would much rather spend hours doodling on napkins with his 4 year old rather than hanging up Christmas lights – but we are REALLY GOOD at play. We get right down on the floor and pretend. ALL. THE. TIME. ALL. DAY. LONG. It’s what we do.
Little Mama brought this out in us. The ability to pretend, allowing ourselves to be fully immersed in the powerful and exciting world of imagination, and to just not be ourselves, for once. But what I’ve come to realize every October 31st, and more profoundly with every passing year on this particular day – is that dressing up in kooky coordinating outfits, pretending to not be us, coincidentally meant we were being exactly who we are.
THAT family.
You know the type. The family that places personalized emoticon stickers sporting their own hairstyles and matching moods on the family calendar. The kind of family that has a barbie doll house, that is in fact barbie-free, and replaced with characters of ourselves (yes, we have asian dolls… sorry, not sorry), so that we can authentically act out the weirdness that captures the very essence that is our family. Nightly. We are that family that actually schedules brainstorming sessions and family meetings to come up with ways to spin the controversy of Orange is the New Black into a palatable, PG-preschool version. And we’re that family whose family halloween costumes and Holiday greetings must in fact, supersede that of our previous year. We are the quintessential family of oddballs that makes it a point to leave trails of our crazy behind us, everywhere we go. And we love every second of it.
This year is a little different however, as you may or may not know – life hasn’t been all that easy. We have been inundated with some pretty serious grown-up stuff, so much so, our creative juices that would normally be flowing at high speed this time of year, essentially came to a dead halt. But we knew we had to come up with something, and fast. We feverishly dug through our dress up trunk packed with family halloween costumes from previous years, coming up short. We have been wracking our brains these past few weeks for unique ideas to out-do our last… all in vain. Up until now, we have come up with virtually nothing. We hit our creative wall and have exhausted all possible ideas that would work for our little crazy crew. But just like that, at the 11th hour – it hit us like a hornet’s sting…
Say hello to The Mini Green Hornet – and her two sidekicks Mama Kato, and Daddy Kato.
Because we all know who’s boss around here, right?
Similar to our act of desperation as Hollywood Starlets circa 2013, we raided our own closets pulling out whatever we could find at the last minute. A little leather here, a little badass there, and voila – we became the dynamic duo-turned-trio from the 1960s (later, remade in 2011).
Little Mama came up short in the badass department but decided not to sweat it, as she was perfectly content with inheriting Big Daddy‘s accessories, Mommy’s Patent Trench, and her go-to black fedora that goes with virtually everything, thanks to our buds at Born to Love Clothing. Yes – we have proudly recycled our masks from the Halloween Days of Yore (again – sorry, not sorry), and Mommy was pretty darn excited to have an excuse to finally wear her leather panel leggings and fold-over boots.
We were thrilled to finally come up with an idea that conveniently addresses Big Daddy‘s need to be a respectable human – and you can’t get anyone more worthy of respect than Bruce Lee, right? Especially, if there’s an undeniable and rather striking resemblance between the two. It also worked with the convenience of finding everyday wear, integrating past halloween accessories, while managing to squeezing our gigantic heads into a couple of Little Mama‘s pretend dress up hats. There was no need or time to shop to make this work – but like anything else, we just made best of the situation that we were presented.
It’s what we do.
The Green Hornet and her loyal sidekicks leave you with this last thought… Don’t forget to play today!
