Not many of my babyStylista friends and readers know about a very well-hidden-top-secret-super-duper-insane skeleton in my closet. Your beloved Kid’s Stylist and blogger, once upon a time, was a Kid’s Entertainer. Yup. I would throw on a big red nose and sing “Rudolph, the red nosed reindeer”, shake my imaginary tail and pretty much make a brilliant fool of myself. It was fun while it lasted, but to be perfectly honest – as much as I loved seeing kids smile, dance and sing along, it was one of the toughest jobs I. Ever. Had. And believe me, working in Beauty and Fashion, Television and film, Tough Cookie was indeed my middle name. But I digress, being a children’s singer and entertainer was by far, the most challenging.
Why, you ask? Because kids are THE toughest critics. They’re honest. They’re raw. They’re down-right picky. And why shouldn’t they be? They’re paying big monopoly bucks to be entertained. It takes a very special person, program, and color scheme to catch, let alone maintain the attention of a 3 year old. I won’t lie – I reveled in the moments I succeeded in grasping these tiny critics’… whoops, I mean, these lovely audience members’ attention and interest. But boy, did it cause a scene. I would resort to jumping up and down, side to side, sweating buckets, digging into my bag of tricks – meanwhile, maintaining a consistent sweat, utilizing my largest range of vocal stylings – from my best rendition of Alvin and the chipmunks, to my deepest growl of a bear. It was down right exhausting. But guess what? As a sucker for punishment easily reversed by reward – I. Loved. It. I loved the music, I loved the interaction, I loved charming the pompom socks off my most eager little friends in the front row. And what I loved the most, was imagining my very own future monkey clapping his/her hands in delight, because I would officially be a pro at bringing that same joy of music and entertainment into their life.
Cut to 3.5 years later.
Thanks to our friends at Kaboom! Entertainment and Phase 4 Films, I was privy to a very exciting new musical animated short format series on DVD, entitled Big Block Singsong. This disk, packed with all that is entertaining, found its way right into the heart, not to mention vocal cords, of my favorite little 3 year old. When the first hint of music blared through our television speakers, we had barely uttered the words, “ready to watch?” before Big Daddy, LD, and I were off the couch and on our feet dancing along to the funky jams of these ridiculously adorable square-headed characters. All unique in personality and style, color, size, and musical chops – these delightful little creatures had more than their share of teachable moments combined with insane chord progressions and equally brilliant lyrics.
Each Big Block Singsong episode features a topic ranging from emotions, to grooming, to colors, to a seemingly boastful (but oh-so-adorable) octopus, to acts of generosity, to sleep (THIS was the deal-breaker for me), and the uber coolness of being different. The beats are reminiscent of your everyday pleasant-to-the-ear top 40 hit, to the infectious swagger of Playstation‘s PaRappa the Rapper, to the colorful and eclectic flair of Yo Gabba Gabba. We love the rhythm, the simplicity of each character, the relatable age-appropo topics (geared towards 3 – 5 year olds, meanwhile, making quite the impression with the 30-somethings in the household), and most importantly, the overall modern feel and quality of the production. You can’t get anymore stylin’ than that.
The lyrics are rather hilarious, and ever so charming (especially for Big Daddy, and myself), but as much as the young viewers are encouraged to singalong, and as catchy as the tunes are, it will probably take a few bouts of pressing repeat on the player to be able to catch the lyrics word for word. However, the interlude between each episode Big Block Singsong is so fabulous, it has become a household mantra before each meal (which to Grammy’s chagrin, is in direct competition with grace before dinner).
Here is a sneak peek at the very unlikely pairing of two characters so different in style but so famously compatible.
And the motown sensibility of this adorable number…
If this doesn’t get my (or your) little ones jammin’ to fruit, I seriously don’t know what will.
We’re delighted that this DVD will be available for the world to enjoy on October 28th, and starting today, October 24th, it is now available On Demand across USA and Canada. And if that doesn’t get you dancing to the beat – perhaps this will…
