Mommy I’m Bored – Travelista Tips and Activities for the Preschool Jetsetter

Labor Day weekend. The last official long weekend before life begins school starts. At least in some parts of the preschool world, anyway.

It is also another travel opportunity for the mini travelistas in your life. Like my little jetsetter.

Finding stimulating, yet portable activities for a preschooler is no easy feat. But with all the travel opportunities we have been fortunate to experience, we have become rather… seasoned carry-on activity packers. And this gives us much to smile about.

The first thing we always do is ensure that we have the traveling lifesaver, aka, the Nylon Travel Play Tray. With its convenient net pockets and durable yet portable features, traveling with it has become essential. In the car, on the train, and definitely on a 6 hour flight.

The first order of business… we packed her must-bring items – her beloved figurines. When I asked little mama to choose the toys she wanted to bring – this was at the top of her list. She enjoyed creating her own in-flight drama among her most favorite royal friends.

We then, broke out the medium-large sized puzzle pieces that we threw into a sandwich baggy.

The night before any trip, we always make a fresh batch of playdough (easy breezy recipe here) that once again, we squeeze into plastic sandwich baggies along with a handful of playdough accessories.

The Melissa & Doug Puffy Sticker Bundle is always a hit with the little one. As you may have already noticed, little mama is all about storytelling and narrating her dolls’ lives. This 2-dimensional, portable, and ridiculously convenient version is beyond perfect for travel.

Stickers and activity books always work wonders. The variety, the stimulation, and who doesn’t love stickers?

Coloring books and crayons (once again, conveniently carried in a ziploc baggy) are an all-time favorite.

Little Miss Crafty Craftofferson apparently acquired mommy’s flair for making her own… unique accessories. The design-your-own bracelet craft set gives little mama the feeling of accomplishment when she brings her projects to completion.

Blank light-weight foam shapes to be decorated with sticker art, is a fave. We usually have several stops to make along the way, so we like to make special thank you cards ahead of time, for our friends and family to let them know how excited we were to spend time with them.

I know this sounds crazy, but our love for our LEGO® DUPLO® My First My First Playhouse 10616 is not limited to the confines of our home. We bring this bag of awesomeness everywhere we go. Yes, it looks like it takes up a lot of room, but it’s light, and when placed strategically in a sac, it is so easy to travel with. My only complaint is how noisy it is putting it away as little mama likes to dump her legos all at once, if only to see my reaction (which is usually good ol’ fashioned mortification nation!).

As the flights, long car rides, and train adventures come to a close, the Nylon Travel Play Tray loses its luster. The need to quickly find an alternative to lap activities becomes priority, and the Martha Stewart 3D Stickers is the absolute perfect way to end an otherwise long, grueling flight. Sticking these reusable 3D stickers on the window is just about the most fun a mini travelista can have, along with the passengers in close proximity. We all get to enjoy the view, accompanied by the remarkable stylings of a preschool artist.

And of course, a trip activity isn’t a trip activity without a captivating story to share with our loyal traveling companion. As we all know, Aladdin’s Jasmine has made quite the impression on little mama as blatantly displayed at her 4th birthday party. Jasmine loves to hear little mama read stories to her and rock her to sleep with a lullaby.

All this… in one trip, in one bag, for one little mama. I call that an in-flight success.
