“If you can dream it, you can do it” Walt Disney
And dream of a Minnie Mouse birthday party, she did.
Earlier this week, our fave mouse (and truth be told, the only mouse that doesn’t leave me screaming and running for the hills – other than Minnie Mouse, of course), celebrated his 90th anniversary. While I was watching tearfully, I felt especially nostalgic about my days in California when we could actually take a spontaneous day-cation in Disneyland. We never did it enough though. Boy, do I regret that.
Now that we’re thousands of miles and across the waters from the happiest place on earth, we needed to bring those ears to our new home up north. Four years ago, shortly after we made the big move from Sunny California to the island, Little Mama was kind of in love, errr, obsessed with Mickey Mouse. His voice, his humor, his overall presence.
She was all about him.
But then, she discovered his undying love for Minnie Mouse, and Little Mama‘s love transcended to a level far beyond love and obsession. She WANTED to be Minnie Mouse. She would run around the house wearing her bow accessorized ears, singing all the Disney songs her 3 year old self could muster. At that point, she was still babbling for the most part – but the one thing she made very clear was that she wanted one thing and one thing only…
A Minnie Mouse Birthday party!
For the years to follow, I had to come up with clever ways to celebrate my quirky and clever Little Mama. This particular year was different. It was an idea that literally landed itself on my lap.
She loved red, she loved Minnie, she loved polka dots, and she loved bows. So why not go with the flow and throw her a:
Bows and Bow Ties Minnie Mouse Birthday party?
First, the outfit…
A simple embroidered tee with her go-to vest, her snazzy frilled mini skirt (which later changed to her Minnie Mouse Birthday party skirt), a pair of scrumptious red ruffled pantaloons, her never-leave-home-without mismatched Chooze shoes, Kids Aviators, and of course her Minnie ears.
Then, we worked on the goodie bag – because what is a party without loot?
Loot bag ingredients:
1. Round clear clam shell CD cases
2. Glue stick
3. Fabric glue
4. Black foam (for the Mickey ear shaped cds)
5. Scissors
6. Letter stickers for names (to personalize the bags)
7. Maxell Recordable 700mb/80 min CDs (to record the celebrant’s favorite jams)
7. 2 1/2″ Red White Polka Dot Wired Ribbon (for bows and bow ties – cut each piece at an angle)
8. 3/8″ Red/White Polka Dots Ribbon (to pinch the bows in the center and glue with fabric glue)
9. Red Paper Lunch Bags (for the loot)
10. Udres 6 Pack Bow Tie (for the boys)
11. Mini Red Gift Boxes (for the party favors)
12. Minnie Mouse Headband Ears (for the girls)
13. Minnie Mouse Birthday Party Favors (for all the kids)
Yes – I know… I went a little overboard. But we are a family of music and what better way to share a piece of our celebrant with her guests than through her fave playlist? I know what you’re thinking… Mix tape cds? Tsk tsk. If that’s not your cup of tea, might I suggest a fun link to spotify of your celebrant’s fave playlist to share with your tiny guests. This was done back in the old ages when we didn’t have Spotify. Also – we wanted to find a way to incorporate Mickey ears with our loot bag. Do what’s right for you and your kiddo!
Some of the Minnie Mouse birthday party details included red and white polka dot plastic sheets that I squeezed together to create a bow and bow tie for the main table display, foam cubes, ribbon to wrap around the foam pieces, and red and white pinwheels to pierce into the foam cubes.
It was a red and white extravaganza!
My dear friend Amber Dawn made her Minnie Mouse 2 tier fondant cake along with her mini Oreo-eared cupcakes. They were as delicious as they were adorable.
Speaking of extravaganza, her little guests had a great time prancing around in a colorful play area packed with soft tumbling toys and imaginative spaces.
Some of our snazzy guests even dressed the part since it was our bows and bow ties party. Even George got into the spirit.
10 points for dad!
We even got our little guests to fill out a wish for the celebrant on her Minnie Mouse dry erase board. We took photos of each guest holding their message or special wish to our little celebrant so she will always remember who came and celebrated with her.
Best part was cake time, though I had a hard time cutting into Minnie’s pristine two tier hat. Don’t let my big excited smile fool you.
Of course Mama had to join in on the fun too, because what’s a Minnie Mouse birthday party without some coordinating nails?
At the end of they day, we were quite certain our Minnie Mouse birthday party was a success when we discovered a very sleepy and satisfied mouse in our back seat dreaming of polka dots and happy places.
Happy 90th anniversary Mickey! We wouldn’t know how to celebrate without you!
