Throwing a kid’s rockstar party is no joke. It takes a lot of little details to fine “tune” such an undertaking. Especially when the rockstar is your 8-year-old-rock-lovin’-heavy-metallin’-daughter. One who loves powdered pink, no less.
There are some fun essentials every Mama or party planning parent of a rockstar kiddo needs to get the party started. Here are the basics:
1. Kid’s Rockstar Party Essentials :: A ROCKSTAR CELEBRANT (BONUS POINTS FOR A SIDEKICK)
I mean… who’s Hall without Oats? Sonny without Cher? Simon without Garfunkel?John without Paul? You get the picture. And in our case, who’s Little Mama without her trusty apprentice, Little Man?
Though I’m pretty sure, he likes to refer to himself as her Manager.
#bossA happy, jolly one, at that…
Ahhh my little thrasher.
2. Kid’s Rockstar Party Essentials :: A CRICUT (or a really really really good pair of scissors)
My friend lent me her Cricut to “try out”. I was a little intimidated at first because I have spent the last 7 birthdays cutting every piece of coordinated decor by hand with my scissors (blood, sweat, and tears, inclusive), and I wasn’t ready for what was to come next. Check out my instastories to see just how miraculous this beautiful and insanely essential this machine is for any of my party planning needs (and pretty much any of my creative projects). I cut out electric guitar pieces using my own cardstock which I later decorated with sticky embellishments (kept things easy this year, because of this guy)…
I used the Cricut as well to cut out perfect circles, stars, rockstar flames, sticky mini stars for “pin the star on Little Mama‘s Guitar”, and get this – words! Yes – I said words! I’m not a huge fan of my own writing, so it was amazing to be able to print out rockstar fonts (why yes, they have a plethora of fonts to choose from on Cricut – basically, what DON’T they do??).
3. Kid’s Rockstar Party Essentials :: RECORDS, RECORDS, AND MORE RECORDS
Records may be old school and maybe even obsolete (depending which Matrix you might be living in), but nothing spells out a kid’s rockstar party more than LPs and CDs. As George wouldn’t allow me to touch his beloved scratch records from his old days of DJ-ing, I went to the local thrift shop and spent maybe $6 total on a bunch of records (always get a bang for your buck by scouring the $2 section and grab the double/triple LP collections). I later placed the different coloured circles my awesome new friend, Cricut cut up for me (Where has Cricut been all my life!?) right smack in the middle to keep our party theme consistent.
I even hired our little in-house paint and glitter pros during a playdate to help me do some damage with these bad boys. I’m telling ya – if you make labor sparkly and messy, they’re all in!
And why not give your party plates a little LP flavor too? I cut out smaller circles with the Cricut and placed them on every second plate (cuz let’s be real, ain’t nobody got time for that). It kept the theme consistent, and sure looked adorable. I mean tell me… when’s the last time you ate off a record?
4. Kid’s Rockstar Party Essentials :: ROCKSTAR COOKIES
Okay – how RIDICULOUSLY CUTE are these cookies right? They were so beautifully designed and meticulously created with love from Little Mama‘s amazing Auntie of Bakeology, at the other end of the country. And not one cookie was damaged in the transport of this batch of goodness (thanks to the handy dandy work of Auntie Rica and Uncle Josh). Check out how she adhered to our crazy request of making things powdered pink, white, and silver all over. I mean… what kind of rockstar theme incorporates those oh-so-un-rockstar-y colours?
Well… we don’t call her the Cookie Whisperer for nothing…
Auntie Rica put in a lot of love in creating these gorgeous cookies, and we couldn’t be more amazed at her design sensibilities. She is Daddy’s cousin after all, and we know how killer of an artist he is. I guess artistry really does run in the genes. Be sure to check out her insane designs here…
And it wasn’t enough for us to have coordinating cookies at Little Mama‘s party, I had to make sure our guests knew how to address them…
5. Kid’s Rockstar Party Essentials :: PERSONALIZED FOOD TAGS USING ROCKSTAR LINGO
Before you get all judge-y on me, hear me out. I mean – how HI.LAR.IOUS is it to put a rockstar spin on all your food items? It certainly dates my husband and I, but it was for a good cause. Besides, it brought a lot of nostalgia back for the parents in attendance. Take a look-see and decide for yourself if you’d eat any of these things! LOL.
6. Kid’s Rockstar Party Essentials :: ROCKSTAR ATTENDEES… AND THEIR PARENTS
You know us Balinos love playing dress up. So why not tell the attendees to do the same? If you’re wondering why some are in their jammies, we told the mini rockstars they had to come all revved up for a “ROCK N’ ROLL JAM”. Loosely translated – feel free to come in your cozy footed jammies, but you better add some studs, shades, and faux hawks, and be ready to make a statement.
And made-a-statement they did.
And if you’re ambitious enough to do a healthy mix of both… why not!? #rockstarjammies
7. Kid’s Rockstar Party Essentials :: WALK OF FAME
Nothing beats personalized anything, as far as I’m concerned. Thanks to Cricut (once again, it saved the day – Thanks Auntie Jenn for letting us borrow this magical device), we were able to welcome all our Rockstars by way of Hollywood stars with their names written on it. Kids love leaving their imprint wherever they go – so I decided to save them the trouble and do it for them.
Hello VIPs.
And yes, much to George’s chagrin which later served as quite the “I told you so” moment, these stars were trashed by the end of the night. But hey – when the party was done, it was lights out, stars out, right? And besides, they were kind of the cutest little details ever. #ignoreyourhusbandwhenhesbeingtoological
8. Kid’s Rockstar Party Essentials :: MUSIC THEMED FAVOURS
In all my years of party planning, I have yet to provide actual favour bags, and I wasn’t about to start now. Mama has little to no time to be decorating said bags, so I wanted to keep things easy peasy lemon squeezy this time around. Blow up Guitars with special Thank You Messages, it is. (Again, thanks Cricut)
9. Kid’s Rockstar Party Essentials :: DISCO LIGHTS AND LIT UP BALLOONS
I said it before, and I’ll say it again. Decorations, streamers, signs… Ain’t no mama got time for that! So why not let the lights do all the work. In our case, Disco Lights which I picked up second hand for one room, and here for the other – as well as little bitty LED Party Lights Bulbs in a few of the oversized balloons. Instead of placing the balloons at the head of a table where no one can really enjoy them, I decided to go against all parental advisory and place 8 (times 2) balloons in coordinating colours all over the dance room. It filled the space, with 1/1000th of the work, and gave the kids something to play with as they danced to beat.
This is how easy it was to convince these VIPs they were at a Rocker concert. All they needed was some bumpin’ music and neon lights.
10. Kid’s Rockstar Party Essentials :: TATTOOS
Of course any rockstar would express herself in the most artistic way – so why not make it easy for them by providing the sponge, a bowl of water, and an unlimited amount of Rocker themed tatts?
I mean, not all of us have the real deal.
Except, maybe this guy?
11. Kid’s Rockstar Party Essentials :: WHY THE CELEBRANT ROCKS NOTE TABLE
You know me and my sentimental ways. Every party, I like to have a table dedicated to special messages from our guests to the birthday girl. Whether it’s a Genie wish for Princess Jasmine, or a Wish in Woody’s boot, or secret messages for the Ninja, we like to carry the tradition of sentiment that Little Mama will one day read as a young adult when she needs a bit of a boost.
12. Kid’s Rockstar Party Essentials :: PIN THE STAR ON THE CELEBRANT’S GUITAR
As a fun twist to Pin the Tail on the Donkey (who still plays that anyway?), Pin the Star on the Rockstar’s Guitar was one of the highlights of the evening. Cricut (obvi) created all the self adhesive glitter stars that each child would tack on to the note at the centre of the guitar. The winner was the one who got the closest to the E note, and the 2nd winner would be the one who was the farthest. Watch out for the cheaters that memorized the placement and feel of the note! That’s what good old spins and Rocker bandanas are for.
13. Kid’s Rockstar Party Essentials :: A MICROPHONE
Every kid’s rockstar party needs an MC. That was me! And of course, my attached back up singer (or should I refer to him as my front-up singer!). With all the noise and excitement, it made the most sense to utilize an amplified option to welcome the guests and yell out rules to games. May I suggest this amazing Wireless Karaoke Microphone found here.
Oh, and don’t forget Baby Banz Headphones for your little back-up babes found here. Added bonus – they go with the outfit, and good gravy they’re cute.
12. Kid’s Rockstar Party Essentials :: A QUIET COZY CORNER
A Teepee Cozy Corner is always a good idea for the rocked out rockstars who just need a little quiet time to reflect on what makes them so darn cool.
‘Though, we all know who is really going to be using the Cozy Corner…. #momlife
13. Kid’s Rockstar Party Essentials :: A TABLE FILLED WITH ALL THAT IS ROCK
From a Fruit Punk Kabob Mohawk (get the Styrofoam Mannequin Head here), to Bohemian Wrapsody kiddie friendly wraps, Hershey “Kiss”(es), you can virtually find any word play that goes with food on your Rockstar table. Little Mama was pretty excited about her Guns ‘N Cookies spread, while everyone else inhaled the Rock “Egg” Rolls and the Groove-dles. It was a tummy filling, color coordinating, rockin’ spread and we were thrilled that our guests went to town.
14. Kid’s Rockstar Party Essentials :: A GUITAR-AMP CAKE
There’s always a focal point to our parties. For me, it’s always the cake. From our friends at Belle’s Confections – there’s virtually nothing they can’t whip up. This is one of those moments where I am pleased with myself for knowing my limits and hiring out. I had a vision, and did she ever rock it out with insane precision.
15. <BONUS ESSENTIAL> Kid’s Rockstar Party Essentials :: PAPARAZZI
If the party is going to be a bunch of Rockstar VIPS, you best be sure to invite the paparazzi. Lucky for us, they came with the package. #proudparents
16. Kid’s Rockstar Party Essentials :: A FAMILY OF ROCKSTAR FANS
This is our first year with the four of us and out of all the parties we’ve ever thrown, this one felt the most like… well… an actual celebration! For the last few years, I was so caught up in the details, and don’t get me wrong – I loved every second of the prep. This year, I had no choice but to find a more streamlined way of doing things leading up to the big day. I had to make things quick, easy, and to the point. In other words, it was a no nonsense party. It was just about dressing up, having fun, and rocking it out as we celebrate another year of my baby girl’s blessed life. Because we just don’t have the time, the hands, or the energy to worry about the details – we kept things simple this year (I know, I know it still looks like way too much work, but I assure you, by Deb standards… this was as basic of a party as I can get).
All that matters is that my little one got what she asked for. To be surrounded by the friends and family she adores, her favourite eats, and the music she loves.
Outfit Deets: Little Mama‘s ultra swag Rock ‘n Roll tankie from Kid Crush USA, Little Man‘s super adorbs tatt shirt for toddlers is available here, and let’s not forget Mama and Daddy’s ultra faux arm sleeves as we don’t have the guts to do the real thang – you can find them here.
Happy 8th Birthday to my little Rockstar!
