It’s the first day of kindergarten for Little Mama.
And she is nothing short of thrilled.
But me on the other hand…
I’m just… sad.
Why? Because for the last 5 consecutive years, this has been my life…
And now, I can barely lift her in my arms. She’s far too busy reaching her own heights.
It’s first day of kindergarten. I just have to keep telling myself this, and it needs to sink in. She’s going to be okay. She’s going to be better than okay. She’s going to be amazing.
This is when Little Mama finally begins her life adventure of exploring and finding her own way. Where she gets to bring her learning to a whole other level, find friends that match her bubbly and happy spirit, adhere to new rules, and interact with different personalities. Most of all, she will blossom into that confident, strong, and over-the-top awesome little lady that I know she already is. All the wonderful things that make up my Little Mama is just going to be enhanced as she figures out her place in this big ol’ world. And as sad as I am to let my little sidekick of 5 years go, I couldn’t be more thrilled for her.
Of course, like anything new – she started the day a little apprehensive.
But as soon as it sunk in (within about 2.5 seconds) that her first day of kindergarten was much like her amazing days in preschool, with the wonderful addition of some new faces and exciting experiences… she couldn’t wait to get things moving along. Ring bell, ring!
Looking at how much my little girl has grown up, I see her character, her sense of self, and notably, her sense of style, emerge. For the past year, my mini-fashionista has enjoyed choosing her own outfits and getting full credit for her sometimes… interesting choices.
Her back-to-school first day of kindergarten outfit choice was no exception.
Now we all know that it’s all about fun and bold fall colors when it comes to the beginning of the school year. But for some reason, her initial choices involved predominantly darker tones. Perhaps, to match her melancholy mood upon waking up an hour and a half earlier than usual.
She wanted to pair a navy cable knit cardigan sweater with a navy skirt and black cat knee high socks as her fun accessory. Luckily I convinced her that it’s still sunny (though brisk) outside, and since today was an extra special day, it wouldn’t hurt to add a little color.
So she opted for a green cotton flair mini, embellished with a floral trim and her go-to rainbow socks.
Now, I’m sure the world and their dog believe that we went buck wild for the back-to-school sales this past summer, but the truth is, we ended up ultimately shopping in our closet. We were too busy this summer traveling, visiting with family and friends, hanging off monkey bars, and running against the high tides at the beach, to put ourselves through the pain of mall drama.
Luckily for us, we have older cousins and their awesome hand-me-downs, the world’s cutest consignment stores, and the uncanny ability to scope out clearance racks 2 seasons before, so we never have to fight the back-to-school crowds.
Meanwhile, back at the school playground, Sass McFrass is smiling from ear to ear. She chose her own outfit, finished her breakfast, strapped on her fabulous new Elephant Backpack from the Bixbee Backpack Animal Collection (because who doesn’t love a back pack that gives back? Check out their awesome buy-one-give-one program here!), and went on her merry way to start the first day of her school career.
My heart broke watching her walk away.
But then she did this… and my heart burst.
