Living with ADHD as a mom
Have you ever sat in front of your computer surfing the net, with over fifty open tabs, staring at you, and you don’t even know where to begin because they’re all of equal importance? You’re overwhelmed… so instead of doing something about it, you contemplate opening up a new tab, ultimately shutting the computer down altogether, and move on to the next thing?
Welcome – to my brain.
What I like to call my “colourful brain” – I. Have. ADHD.
I will be sharing with you, the reality of living with ADHD as a mom, looking back at my school years where I performed the Oscar-winning rendition of “having it all together”, when in reality, I spent most of my life masking struggles of the everyday. From merely getting by in school (though shockingly excelling at it on paper), to impulsive decision making, to the inability to prioritize everyday tasks leading to the unattainable sense of time management, to sleep deprivation caused by excessive ruminating, to the extreme energy surges contrasting the moments that looked a whole lot like laziness, right into my young adult years of constant overwhelm – yet shockingly thriving in it.
Until I became a Mom of 2.
Parenting in the pandemic of 2020/21/Current Day – many inevitable truths come out. My own personal struggles revealed itself in all its glory (although diagnosed years prior), and merely coping was no longer enough. Between homeschooling with learning resistance, running a business at home, chasing a toddler, and managing the everyday – our household entered a new phase of chaos. Home no longer felt like my safety net. It represented my brain in the very literal sense, and the challenges of living with ADHD as a mom were no longer mine to experience. It was affecting everyone around me, especially my children.
In this episode, I will also share some of the interesting, more ‘colourful’ aspects of having ADHD, balanced out with the more paralyzing features that have made life very difficult, notably as a mom. I will share some strategies that have worked for me, living with ADHD as a mom, as well as some of the not-so-effective ideas that left my repertoire as quickly as it arrived.
