Living most of my adult life in California, one of my least favorite seasons of the year falls right around this week – where hints of winter, fall into spring, as we approach summer. I’m talking about…
June Gloom.
It’s cold. It’s hot. It’s wet. It’s dark. It’s gloomy.
But let’s not sweat the small stuff. Summer is just around the corner, and there are far more important things to worry about in life, than gloomy weather. So, like anything else in life – let’s embrace it. We’ve learned to roll with the punches and find the perfect outfits that work with the transitional weather to add a little color to an otherwise grey day.
Here are 5 favorite looks that keep the June Gloom Days bright – Rainy Day Kids Fashion:
1:: THE BLAZER, DRESS & BLOOMER SET
When Little Mama was a wee toddler, she was all over the place: Up, down, and upside down. But even amidst the monkey business, she loved (and still loves) wearing dresses. Living on an island where rain happens more often than not during the first half of the year, we’ve had to be creative with her love of dresses. Ensuring the materials are breathable, stretchy, and relatively warm, there would be no need to layer with much more than a pair of leggings or bloomers. As much as we love layers, nothing beats the flexibility of a cotton print dress. Throw on a cotton blazer, and you’re good to go.
2:: THE CARDIGAN
We love the timeless and classic look of the cardigan. When it comes to Rainy Day Kids fashion, a solid cotton cardigan immediately comes to mind. Not only does it keep the little ones warm, and is easy to peel off when the sun peeks out, it is just so darn cute. Don’t forget to accessorize!
3:: THE FUZZY VEST & BOOTS
Some days aren’t so rainy, but the clouds never seem to leave. It’s tempting to go with the overall mood when nature brings in the gloom, and opt for dark colors. Not a problem – take this opportunity to make a statement! Play with a variety of textures. Faux fur, denim, with a little patent pleather goes a long way to bring an all black outfit from drab to fab.
4:: THE MOTO JACKET & FEDORA
As the spring season approaches, the idea of storing winter puffy jackets and mittens becomes much more appealing. What never seems to leave our closets, however, (and this goes for Mommy and Big Daddy as well) are the Motorcycle leather jackets. Okay, so Little Mama‘s leather is more pleather (I mean, what business does this monkey have owning a $300 jacket? No thanks…) – but it’s still a moto jacket that stands the test of every season. It’s light enough for a warm evening, thick enough to withstand the winds, and boy, does it sure look cool. Bring this otherwise basic look to another level with a pop of colorful boots, topped off with a herringbone fedora from Born to Love Clothing, and we’re ready to face the nippy mornings.
5:: THE DENIM JACKET & BEANIE
Another survivor of the front hall closet purge, are the denim jackets. These are perfect for every season especially living close to the water and a stone throw away from the mountains. They’re never too trendy, so adding this must-have item to your rainy day kids fashion wardrobe, is always a good plan. Why not have some fun, and add a crazy knit cap that resembles your kid’s fave movie. Want it to be extra fab? Fringe does the trick.
