11 Perks of Having a Wide Age Gap Between Siblings

April 10, 2019 By Deb B. 10 Comments

It’s National Siblings Day and we are celebrating in coordinating outfits and coordinating smiles …

Perks of a Wide Age Gap between Siblings www.sassandsmalls.comWell… “ish”…

Perks of a Wide Age Gap between Siblings www.sassandsmalls.comThe benefits of having a wide age gap between siblings has been something we have been weighing out since the day I found out I was pregnant for the second time – 6 years ago. With every pregnancy and after every loss, I had to reason with myself why my goal gap of 2 years was just not in the cards for us. In the years to follow, while attempting to bring a new little playmate for my Little Mama from toddler years to early preschool years to school years – I began to see that having this extra time with her, not only gave us abundant benefits – it was downright crucial.

Here are some of the wonderful things we enjoy about our 7 year gap with our two little monkeys.

#1. Perks of a Wide Age Gap Between Siblings :: Baby Gets a TON of Quality Mommy and Me Time

Perks of a Wide Age Gap between Siblings www.sassandsmalls.comI always dreamed of having a whole team of kids that I can call my own. I envisioned them to be exactly 18 months apart and everything would go smoothly from hand me downs, to teaching moments, to freshly learned parenting hacks passed down seamlessly from one child to the next. Having a 7 year gap has been the exact opposite of that. Nothing is smooth, and nothing is seamless. Yes – I have been able to pass down a couple of Little Mama‘s more gender neutral outfits, but everything else is a new experience. New personality, new sleeping rituals, new body parts. New new new. The years haven’t been much help either – as not only have I soon forgotten what life is like with a newborn, but I am now an older mom with less energy and less time (and way more aches).

However… the benefits of having 2 kids earthside (I’m a proud mama of a whole team in another entity as most my readers know), with a wide gap between siblings, have outweighed the not-so-easy times. Being able to spend quality time with Little Man while his big sister is at school has been life changing. All the wonderful things I was able to do with Little Mama but only for a short time during maternity leave, I am now able to do in spades, or at least until he attends school himself (now that I’m a work-at-home mom). He gets some serious one-on-one time and we are both reaping the benefits. That means more OOTD shots for me, and more baby snuggles for me… err… i mean him.

At the other end of the sibling spectrum – because we don’t have two littles on their feet at the moment, Little Mama not only got 7 full years of individualized attention from mommy and daddy, she continues a good full year of “big sis” attention while we have the hands free freedom of a baby carrier, and not having to run around chasing a new toddler. By the time she is 9 and he’s mobile, she might even be mature enough to see passed the struggles of having to share mom and dad’s attention with an attention-stealing 2 year old brother.

#2. Perks of a Wide Age Gap Between Siblings :: He Laughs at All her Jokes

Perks of a Wide Age Gap between Siblings www.sassandsmalls.comSibling rivalry is something that might be inevitable at any stage within any age gap – but we’re finding with this wide age gap between siblings that they seem to have the perfect balance. She tells corny jokes, he seems to “get” them. Since these first couple of years of adjusting from a life of being the only child to having a sibling is relatively fragile (considering she had 7 whole years of mommy and daddy to herself), we find that his interest in her quirky ways is such a benefit to her confidence and self esteem. Little Mama feels important, adored, loved, respected. As an 8 year old, it’s not always easy to find that in peers – so an in-house #1 fan (that isn’t mommy or daddy) might do the trick.

Miss Comedian, your peanut gallery awaits!

#3. Perks of a Wide Age Gap Between Siblings :: It Teaches Both Kids About Tolerance and Reading Social Cues

Perks of a Wide Age Gap between Siblings www.sassandsmalls.comBeing a little guy in this big ol’ world isn’t always easy. Especially when you have an overly smitten big sister 3 times your size attacking you with hugs and kisses 23 hours of a 24 hour day. With a one hour break. Often we have to break her tight hold on him and motivate her with more rewards of baby snuggles for her to agree to let him go. It’s not always smooth sailing – especially for the younger sibling because they really have no option but to surrender to the smothering. As much as we attempt to teach her to manage her impulses – we also find that he is building a tolerance for different types of interactions. Mommy greets him with weird names and butt wipes, Grammy greets him with happy church songs (which he loves btw), Dada greets him with more corny jokes and high fives, Poppy greets him with fun DIY riding contraptions and new purchases, and big sis – well big sis greets him with sloppy kisses and loud screams. Is it always pleasant? Not on your life. Does he build tolerance and understanding? Well, after 10 months of not so gentle lullabies, he learns to cope. He will eventually learn how to fend for himself and work through it, and the best part? He learns that it’s okay to not always be treated like the fragile, helpless little human mommy thinks he is. Building resilience is an added bonus. He may be tiny, but he’s mighty.

As for big sis – learning very quickly about the beauty of broken sleep (not caused by her…), having to leave the playground prematurely because baby brother needs to nap on a real bed, and being able to see that having a baby isn’t always metaphorical sunshine and rainbows (though, in our case, it quite literally is) – has been the best life lessons of tolerance and understanding of others’ needs above her own. She has learned that she has to accommodate to another family member, and to understand that life isn’t always about immediate gratification (or “me me me”). She builds stamina, tolerance for others, and most importantly, patience and empathy for her little sidekick.

Now that Little Mama is in Grade 2, she is exposed to a variety of social situations. Some friends are well passed the L.O.L. Dolls which she, most certainly, is not. Other kids her age are more active, and most others are verbally direct. Often times, she is faced with situations where her hugs and own rules of play are no longer welcomed or applicable. It can be a harsh reality for her (heartbreaking for mommy), and most times, we end up seeing resistance (and hurt feelings) from her end. It’s tough that these kids are going through a time in their lives where they are exercising their rights vocally, and sometimes my Little Mama just doesn’t read the signs fast enough. Not her fault. Not their fault. She’s 8. They’re 8. But having a baby brother at home has been the best practice for her. Admittedly, George and I have allowed her to cross boundaries of affection when it was just the three of us. She would jump on our heads and plant kisses all over our faces, and we were okay with it. We were more than okay with it. But a 10 month old baby? Well – he’s done after one set. This helps Little Mama know that “no means no.” Sure, it takes about 30 instances a day for her to finally stop the smothering sessions, but by the 31st, learning takes place. It’s a beautiful thing to know that our littlest one has in fact, taught his older sister of 7 years, that consent, understanding social cues and reading body language is important – especially now that she’s big girl status.

#4. Perks of a Wide Age Gap Between Siblings :: We Have a Built-in Helper

Perks of a Wide Age Gap between Siblings www.sassandsmalls.comHaving an older sibling that understands our job as caregivers, has been such a gift. I can count with one hand how many times I’ve had to explain to Little Mama what needs to be done to take care of the baby. She simply watches from the sidelines as we go about our daily business. Before I beckon for help, more times than not, she is already standing at the doorway geared up with baby wipes, entertainment toys, Baby Head Protector (yup, we have one, and they’re AWESOME), and of course, coordinating big sis and baby bro outfits because she is a girl after my own heart. She has basically taken on the role of 2nd mommy, and we couldn’t be more ecstatic. Not only is this helpful to mom and dad – it is also a huge confidence booster for our not-so-little Little Mama who has just proven to herself that she is such an important and necessary part of this family. Can’t get any better than that – especially only months after losing the ever-so coveted only child status.

#6. Perks of a Wide Age Gap Between Siblings :: She Has Someone to Play Footsies With

Perks of a Wide Age Gap between Siblings www.sassandsmalls.comFor the past 8 years, Little Mama has only known a life with adults. We run errands, we clean the house, we have adult-ish conversations, we eat food with utensils (or not??). Basically – we’re no fun. Okay – so we’re fun, and she loved it. But having this little brother who is actually willing to do whatever she wants – like play footsies – is such a bonus for her. Any closer of a gap, with my daughter’s “spirited” personality, I’m pretty sure there would be other suggestions and toys that they would have to fight over. Having a much younger sibling has allowed her to be able to set the rules of play even just for the first formative years of their relationship.

Perks of a Wide Age Gap between Siblings www.sassandsmalls.comAll that to say – having the wide age gap between siblings allows my often inflexible daughter to dictate their games… and she loves it. And the best part – these two toy-loving kiddos of mine are at such different stages of their lives, there is virtually no fighting over toys.

… yet.

#7. Perks of a Wide Age Gap Between Siblings :: Matching Outfits Are Even MORE Ridiculous(ly cute)

Oh don’t get me wrong – nothing beats two siblings who are close in age in coordinating outfits. They’re like twins without having the challenges of having two babies at the same exact time (although – having actual twins would be mind blowing amazing too). But when they are closer to a decade apart, it’s like the mini version of mommy and me. It’s not something you see everyday, and it’s darn cute.

Perks of a Wide Age Gap between Siblings www.sassandsmalls.comKid Crush USA provided us with a plethora of outfits to choose from and of course with our collection of Slouchy Capsfrom Born to Love Clothing and Knuckleheads, these two have been having a blast prancing (and in his case, scooting) around in their matching outfits. Sure, they don’t look like twins, but they sure look proud to be part of the same family holding the best roles ever.

Proud Big Sis and #1 fan Baby Bro.

#8. Perks of a Wide Age Gap Between Siblings :: Big Sis Shares Her Wisdom Based on “More Life Experience” and Little Brother is Actually Okay With it (For Now)

Perks of a Wide Age Gap between Siblings www.sassandsmalls.comAnother fun perk for big sis is that she is oh-so-wise being that she is more than a handful of years older than her very impressionable baby brother. At least she thinks she is. And truth be told – I can’t argue that most of what she advises her baby brother is nothing less than accurate. In fact, the same words of advice from big sis will be more likely well-received by baby brother than if it were coming from mommy and daddy. Because let’s face it, big sis is waaaaay cooler than those other two. It’s also quite the treat for me to be able to (somewhat) trust my 3rd set of eyes on the baby who is often seen scooting where he shouldn’t be, or eyeing objects to put into his mouth. This is where having an in-house “Big Brother” (or in our case, big sister) definitely has its perks.

Well… let’s see how long this lasts without some resistance…

#9. Perks of a Wide Age Gap Between Siblings :: Our Bond with Our Firstborn Is Unbreakable

Perks of a Wide Age Gap between Siblings www.sassandsmalls.comEven with all the changes of adding a new member to our once 3-person crew, the bond we have with our firstborn will always be extra special. Why? Because we had a solid 7 years of one-on-one with Little Mama and despite potentially having a hard time adjusting to such a drastic change in the family dynamic, the fact that she had us all to herself for so many years gives us (and her) the confidence that our closeness will never waver.

#10. Perks of a Wide Age Gap Between Siblings :: Mommy is More Rested and Ready to Do This Thang

Perks of a Wide Age Gap between Siblings www.sassandsmalls.comLike I said, Mama ain’t no spring chicken. Yes, the last time I took care of a baby, I had more energy and less body aches. But that doesn’t mean I’m not equipped this time around. In fact, it’s been quite the opposite 7 years later. Because I knew a life of little to no sleep, and somewhat developed a stamina for such a life, I valued sleep that much more. With a child that can independently sleep (granted, it took a handful of years to get there), I managed to get years under my belt of much needed rest in preparation for baby numero 2.

Having said that… I am practically half asleep writing this post, so a) Don’t listen to me, I have no idea what I am muttering about, and b) at least I only have to focus on one overnight party man at a time (get your mind outta the gutter, I’m talking about the baby, not his father) while big sis is fast asleep in the other room. Win win for all.

Check back with me again during flu season…NOT. FUN. WITH. ANY. AGE. GAP.

#11. Perks of a Wide Age Gap Between Siblings :: It Is A Surprising Bond like No Other

Perks of a Wide Age Gap between Siblings www.sassandsmalls.comMy dream of having kids close in age is just that – a dream. So we continue to accept the reality of knowing that my children may or may not continue to be as close as they enter their preteens, teenage years, and adult years. Here’s some food for thought, however – Because their years are so vast between them, Little Man has the benefit of having his big sister pave the path a good amount of years ahead of him: In schooling, relationships, career, and life in general. Big Sis has the joy of being able to guide her younger brother and teach him the ropes – in all facets of his life, while living vicariously through his life adventures. I love that they have something that they can give to one another throughout the years.

One day, the gap will no longer be there and they will be two adults still holding hands getting through life as sister and brother.

**Side Note:

And just so we’re clear – all of the above perks are completely and utterly applicable to siblings with a smaller gap. This is merely our experience of having a wide gap between siblings, because quite simply – we had no choice.

Although it wasn’t an easy journey to get here, as far as having our two kids with a 7 year gap between them – we love our reality and cannot wait to see their relationship evolve and soar.

Happy National Siblings Day to all families!

These two are so precious and loving the outfits! We have four kids, who are all about three years apart. It’s been a great age gap for us, and then of course, we have the wide gap from our 12 year old to our two year old… so many great things about their relationship too and it’s amazing watching it blossom.

There are definitely lots of benefits to having an age gap. It’s nice that your firstborn had more independence before the second arrived. I would say the hardest time I ever went through as a parent was when I had a toddler and a newborn!

Oh mama I am in tears reading this. I love your story and your perspective. I read through your other post about your losses and I am right there with you. We lost our baby boy just 8 months ago. It’s hard knowing we are connected through child loss but comforting knowing we are not alone. Thank you for sharing your story 💛

This was extremely eye opening. My sister and I do not have a huge age gap between us at all, but when I had my kids – now ages 10, 6 and 4. My son and my youngest definitely seem to not fight as much as the two youngest do because they are in different life stages.

Having a wide age gap between siblings has its perks. One benefit is that the older child gets plenty of quality mommy and me time before the younger one arrives. The age gap allows for individualized attention and a stronger bond with each child. The younger sibling benefits from having an older sibling who laughs at their jokes and provides a sense of importance and confidence. It also teaches both children tolerance and reading social cues. The older sibling learns to be patient and accommodating, while the younger one develops resilience and coping skills

But I wanted to celebrate the people who helped create it.

This music video may have my face & voice on it, but it belongs to so many incredible people who gave their time, talent, encouragement and 💗.

From @jakerfilms, who completed 2 seasons of Sass & Small Talk with a bang, producing the most epic rebrand catapulting this whole thing - the very thing I never knew I needed.

To @eric.thebald who shared my vision & skyrocketed it to the next level.

I carried so much guilt this past year. June hit I carried so much guilt this past year.

June hit hard. Work. Caregiving. Mental load to the nth degree. End-of-school-year chaos. Health stuff. Heavy news. Financial stress. And loads of the dreaded Mama Guilt - of not being able to celebrate my son’s birthday for the 3rd year in a row due to unforeseen circumstances…

Then another mama, also tired, also busy, also carrying her own invisible load in the realm of business and caregiving, invited my son to join in for her already-planned birthday celebration for HER son…

And even if he was surrounded by new faces in a higher grade - it ended up being everything my son would’ve wanted: laughter, friends - new and old, Nerf battles, a waterslide bouncy castle of his dreams, a killer last minute donut cake tower from @pacificplatterscharcuterie (Thank you to another Mama that gets it!), and memories to last a lifetime…

It reminded me of something I think many of us need to hear:

Leaning on your village doesn’t mean you failed your child.

It means you SHARED a load you were never meant to carry alone.

There is something powerful about mothers who see each other’s invisible load… and quietly decide to help carry it.

The village I needed wasn’t made up of people with more time or more energy.

Sometimes our village looks like another mom simply saying,

“Don’t worry - I gotchu. Let’s do this together.”

And that is more than enough. ❤️

Bless your big, beautiful, busy heart my friend @sarjo08 and @jasonhemz for inviting us and filling my little man’s cup at a time we weren’t as equipped to. He had a blast and absolutely loved celebrating with him and all his friends … ❤️❤️❤️

It happened on Autism Pride Day. — For years, we It happened on Autism Pride Day.

—

For years, we spent so much energy trying to help our daughter fit into a world that wasn’t built for her.

We chased therapies.
We chased milestones.
We chased the idea of what we thought her future was supposed to look like.

Sometimes, if I’m being completely honest, we were trying to fix things we didn’t yet understand.

We heard heartbreaking predictions.

Some professionals told us she would likely never progress beyond the abilities of a five- year-old child.

We were told to prepare for limitations.

We were told to lower our expectations.

What no one told us was that the goal was never to make her more like everyone else.

The goal was to help her find her way to HERSELF.

That shift changed everything.

Over the years, we homeschooled when it was the right fit, even when others questioned it. We searched for programs that understood her. We listened to support workers who saw her strengths. We found camps, social groups, sports programs, and communities where she wasn’t expected to fit into someone else’s mold.

And little by little, she began to thrive.

She found her voice.

She found confidence.

She found belonging.

Most importantly, she found herself.

This year, after finding a school program that truly supports her learning style and focuses on life skills, she said something I will never forget:

“I finally feel like myself, Mommy.”

Those words healed parts of my heart I didn’t even know were still holding their breath.

Because the truth is, I wasn’t waiting for her to become someone different.

I was waiting to know she would be okay.

And she is.

Autism Pride isn’t about pretending there aren’t challenges.

It’s about recognizing that autistic people don’t need to become less autistic to deserve joy, friendship, opportunity, acceptance, or love.

It’s about taking pride in who they are and embracing the community where they belong.

Today, I celebrate my daughter exactly as she is.

She has taught me more about courage, authenticity, resilience, and unconditional love than I could ever teach her.

I am so proud of her.

And if I’m honest, she’s been my teacher all along.
Nine parents. Nine very different stories. (Mine, Nine parents.

Nine very different stories.
(Mine, included).

Military/Naval families. Solo parents. Single parents. Neurodivergent & Profound Needs families. Blended families. Adoptive families. Families navigating loss, burnout, caregiving, infertility, generational trauma, and everything in between.

What surprised me most wasn’t how different we were and how different our journeys were to get here.

It was how much we SHARED in common.

❤️

Season 2 of Sass & Small Talk reminded me that behind every smile, every school drop-off, every achievement, and every family photo, there is often a story no one else can see.

And yet, somehow, we keep showing up.

So take that moment to pause, and pat yourself on the back. Better yet, hug a parent in your life, who may be carrying that invisible load too.

It’s a game changer.

Behind every Momfluencer… It’s still the month of Behind every Momfluencer…

It’s still the month of May, the month moms get their Hallmark spotlight - So in honour of that, I wanted to share a little story.

When I first moved from LA to Victoria as a new mom and began building my brand online from home, I struggled with finding a true sense of belonging. I never felt like I fully belonged in the “mom world”, especially in a new community, not fully in the creative world, and definitely not in the often viral-chasing digital world I could never seem to keep up with.

Ironically, I was a “part” of everything but belonged to nothing.

…or so I thought.

As I opened myself up to the many communities WITHIN my community, I realized something:

The moment I stopped trying to “fit in” and leaned into who I actually am… that’s when everything changed.

And that’s what I love most about this group of women featured by @islandparent Magazine — in all the ways we are different, we are also one and the same.

Different voices. Different lives. Different ways of showing up for the world.

But all rooted in connection, creativity, community, and a deep love for our families.

Beyond being “mamas of influence,” these women use their platforms while opening their hearts and homes.

Some share family life tips, recipes, wellness journeys, sandwich gen truths, and initiate mental health conversations.
Some inspire through faith, fashion, creativity, gardening, travel, and outdoor adventures.
Some advocate fiercely for neurodivergent children while navigating neurodivergence themselves.

Some use storytelling, humour, or podcasts 😉 to help other parents feel seen and less alone.

And somehow, in between school pickups, medical appointments, assessment forms, homemaking, caregiving, and late nights searching for a little silence and brain clarity after long days of “othering” — we are building businesses, brands, and meaningful lives for our families.

We cheer each other on.
We lift each other up.

And in finding my place within this realm of motherhood… I found home.

“It takes a village to raise a child… and a community to raise the parent.”

I didn’t expect this to actually work…

⸻

For the past few weeks, I’ve been working quietly on something really special — a surprise for every guest who’s ever been part of @sassandsmalltalkpodcast… from my Zoom OGs - circa 2022, to my TELUS @storyhive seasons on the tube 📺, to my crew/village/emotional support squad.

What started as a gift — a piece of music from my out-of-the-box-thinker & editor @jakerfilms, turned into something SO. MUCH. MORE. MEANINGFUL.

With the help of my incredible creative village at @haus.of.owl @remy.is.remy, led by the big beautiful brain 🧠 of Eric Hinch @eric.thebald, my Director 👏🏼🎬 Hinchalot Films (www.filmnow.ca), and the talented Dan @dn.gib & @erinbradleyartist 💄, we brought it to life!

… but the part that gets me right in the gut??

THE SMALLIES…. THESE KIDS….

The very kids who made all of us parents in the first place — including mine, who aren’t normally THIS comfortable “performing” in front of a camera.

Kids who have felt burnout.
Kids who have felt misunderstood.
Neurodivergent kiddos that hold a special place in my ❤️.

Kids who showed up anyway — with courage, joy, and love — to help me create something meaningful for their parents.

And somewhere in all of this…

I found my way back to me.

Back to music.
Back to creativity.
Back to MY SASS.
‘cuz isn’t this what Sass & Small Talk is all about?

Easter used to feel like pressure: The perfect m Easter used to feel like pressure:

The perfect meal.
The perfect table.
The kids sitting through the meal and actually eating it.
The food not burning.

And somehow… still ending the day exhausted, touched out, and a little resentful…

This year, I let go. I had no choice… with the launch of the new season on the pod, I had to choose my battles…

My 7-year-old — my busy, high-energy, “maybe not spaghetti” kid — decided he was making “superrrrr spaghetti.”
His way.
His ideas.
His “special ingredients.”

Was it messy? Yep.
Was it chaotic? Absolutely.
Was it perfect? Not even close.

But something shifted.

He took ownership.
He created.
He plated dinner like a little chef with a vision (volcano spaghetti and all 🌋🍝).

And he was SO proud.
And me?
I rested. I watched. I let go of control — and the mental load that usually comes with it.

THIS is what I’m learning:
• The more we try to control everything, the heavier it gets for us… and the less space our kids have to rise.

• When we let them lead (in age-appropriate ways), they don’t just help… they LEAD.

More pride.
More participation.
More appreciation.
More connection.
Less perfection.
More magic.
** BONUS: and less craving for screen time #winwin

This wasn’t the Easter dinner I would’ve planned…but it’s the one we’ll actually remember ❤️

Took me an entire lifetime to figure it out:
• Spent all of my childhood trying to “fit in”
• Struggled to mask but did it anyway
• Met a boy. Also a creative and professional masker.
• Took a “creative” path less travelled as young adult on a one way flight to LA
• Loved life.
• Received negative feedback from well-intentioned naysayers and loved ones
• Felt shame for not hitting the markers
• Became a mom.
• Read ALLLL the parenting books.
• Spent over a decade fighting against my first born’s “artist” brain and finding ways to “fix” what was not even broken
• Hated conforming and made some pivots while wearing metaphorical headphones to block out opinions/outside noise
• Loved Life
• Had my youngest little man - came out of womb loud, intentional, & unapologetic
• Threw out all parenting books and accepted the beautiful neurodivergent 🧠s taking over our entire household
• Gave both kids creative freedoms and stepped aside (mostly not intentionally. they’re too fast and I’m too old)
• Learned how to celebrate the curious, comical, and weirdly wired brains that is our family.
• Let my kids teach ME to have courage, think differently, and not just take the road less travelled - but actually #owningit
• Jumped into creating my own #podcast headfirst and never looked back

Holiday burnout hits moms and caregivers hard — an Holiday burnout hits moms and caregivers hard — and the guilt of not being able to do it all as planned can be heavy.

This year, after months and months of overstimulation, busy-ness, grief, worries, transitions, and may many many sleepless nights, we chose quiet. Simple. Unplanned. And a lot of it had to do with my own exhaustion and not being able to do all the things - like I used to in the past.

And in letting go, my kids not only enjoyed the simplicity, pressure-free, they loved the spontaneity, the lack of rushing from one thing to another, keeping old traditions while creating new memories.

They even offered to be a part of the planning and the doing.

It never had to be perfect.
It never had to just fall on my shoulders.
And it never was about a tree surrounded with every item on their wishlist.

They just wanted me to play with them, wrap gifts with them, eat with them, and let them do some of the caregiving as well.

Maybe that was the magic after all.
For the last 3 Christmas seasons, my girls and I s For the last 3 Christmas seasons, my girls and I switched things up. We were finding we were already maxed out with our own households - the lists, the gifts, the prep, the mess. Omg… the mess.

It was time to take a break from@the stress, and to find joy through this busy season, while putting our “cute” on again.

… and so, the birth of “Annual High Tea with the ladies” came to be:

We ditched the gifts.
Kept the girlfriends.
Elevated the carbs.
… and the heels.

And yes - the tea just got a little sweeter.

It’s been ✨14✨ YEARS of doing this as a family, I get asked every year how we pull this off. Esp with limited time, budget, and busy kids??

Easy:
• Cue theme music (“Alexa, get us in #kpopdemonhunters mode”)
• Beat our faces down with a little @amoresarte_arteesamor from our bestie Uncle @andrewvelazquez_ ‘s killer 💋 palette #onlythebest
• dust off my podcast studio lights, most likely incorrectly. (I am NO @remy.is.remy, @nikkye_music , @eric.thebald , @jakerfilms, @brianbobila, or @hoelune)
• clear my phone cuz it’s always full • throw on some DIY outfits we happen to have in our dress up trunk (OR Grammy’s closet!)
• grab last minute wigs (and in my case - clip on BANGS) that don’t exactly match the OG characters, but who cares… it’s our spin anyway…)
• George @gjavier5, our in-house Jinu, just got ready for the day as normal 😂😂😂😂😂😂
- Start bribing the kids AND George (but guess what - they LOVE our #familytradition too!! EVEN Jenny, my kiddo’s beloved (and often creepy doll who participates in most of our #FamilyHalloween themes. Gotta love Jenny!🪆

It’s 10000% chaotic, always a mess, but it’s how the Balinos do #Famoween (and Christmas… lazy greetings here we come), and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

#BTS
The BALINO FAM is ready for our Comeback of 2025. The BALINO FAM is ready for our Comeback of 2025.

Just call us the “B POP Fam-O-Ween Hunters” 🎤

Plot twist of 2025? Our demons to fight — grief and loss, overwhelm, caregiving challenges, new school, intolerance, advocacy, no sleep, basically… life-ing.

But guess what?

We didn’t break — we TRANSFORMED. (As my kids would say - we SLAYED 2025).

We stopped trying to fit into places that weren’t made for us. Just like these characters on #KpopDemonHunters

• We are choosing to show up for one another and our parents. Fully.
• We are choosing our battles
• We no longer apologize for simply being us. In all our messy, chaotic #neurospicy, busy, loud, glittery, imperfect ways.

And when we let our special big little girl be exactly who SHE is — not who the world told her to be — everything shifted. For HER and for our ENTIRE family.

Peace came. Joy came. She shined.
Heck - she even spearheaded this year’s #famoween theme with the help of her “Baby” bro. It’s been 14 years of finding her place in the world and facing heartache and struggle along the way. We had a BREAKTHROUGH this year.

But it started with working on us as a family.

So here we are.

Tired.
Ready.
Golden.
