“Mommy, we wanna be Cleopatra and King Tut for Halloween”.
Sigh.
I wasn’t completely convinced that my 7 year old and <gasp> my 4.5 month old understood what this actually entailed. Ever since our local museum featured the beautiful and everso ornate and interactive Egypt: The Time of the Pharoahs display, my Little Mama has been obsessed with Cleopatra and King Tut. She has been adamant for months that she was meant to be Cleopatra at least once in her life. I mean – she has the bangs after all. (Her logic, not mine…)
I wasn’t as adamant. Moreover, I wasn’t completely confident that being Egyptian Pharoahs for our Fam-o-ween theme this year would be a great idea. I mean, I have no business being shy of 5 months post partum, wearing a form fitting gown that would obviously make me blush, and anyone who knows George, knows he would never be caught dead or alive wearing gladiator sandals. Truth is – we already had something up our sleeves, and it just wasn’t going to be this (standby for our big Fam-o-ween reveal on the big day itself).
But I digress.
Cleopatra and King Tut. How were we going to swing this with an eager and extremely persistent Smallie and a semi-willing Smaller Smallie, and not have it interrupt our Fam-o-ween plans? Well – like every Halloween, there was going to be an obscene amount of events and get togethers where my Little Mama would be asked to come in costume, so I figured… why not let her have her own mini- theme?
And let’s face it – some families don’t really put too much emphasis on themes and coordinating outfits anyway.
Please note:
WE. ARE. NOT. ONE. OF. THOSE. FAMILIES.
So I decided if she wanted to partially veer away from our Fam-o-ween plans (waaaah – I knew this day was coming…), I would absolutely encourage her. But I wasn’t about to fork out $50 for a new costume for her, and an oversized King Tut costume for her brother (because goodness knows there are no Pharaoh Costumes available for the teeny tiny Tuts among us).
So…
I made her sew it…(for both Cleopatra and King Tut)
This post isn’t going to give you step by step instructions on how to make this costume. It’s a simple cut and stitch situation – feel free to copy our set up. (And a quick note: for the King Tut headdress – simply cut a striped piece in the shape above and stitch part of an elastic headband at the top section, which will allow the piece will drape on each side – I’ll come up with a DIY video when I’m not too busy nursing/changing/burping said Tiny Tut). Standby…
What I wanted to share in this post, is that allowing my Little Mama to create her own costume, with limited set up help and finishing touches from her not-so-sewing-savvy mommy, was both empowering for Little Mama and freeing for her mama! This kept her busy for an entire afternoon, and it was amazing to see how excited she was to bring something meaningful to completion. Yes, Halloween is meaningful to us.
Always.
She was even blissed out buying the fabric. A chance to shop with my favorite girl in a fabric store filled with all the crafty goodness?
Yes please.
So how did it all turn out?
Ladies and Gentlemen, may I introduce to you Little Cleo-Mama, and Tiny Tut!
With a backstitch here, and a closet shopping spree there, Little Cleo-Mama accompanied by her sidekick Tiny Tut, was able to come up with a fabulous costume without breaking the bank (and if breaking the bank is less of a concern for you than poking your finger with a needle – than might I suggest you grab the next best thing (for both kid’s Cleopatra and King Tut here and here…)
What pleased me to no end, is the fact that Cleopatra and King Tut go hand in hand, just like these two little characters of mine.
And now that we have our little guy, it is a no-brainer that he will be participating in all Halloween family Fam-o-ween shenanigans, whether he likes it or not.
Luckily, he’s almost always completely game.
Don’t be afraid to let your little ones take the wheel when it comes to DIY projects. Kids can absolutely shock you with what they are able to accomplish.
‘Cause mommy making a SECOND costume for Halloween, just because they share an affinity for bangs?? Ain’t nobody got time (or money) for that.
If you can DIY, do it. And if your kiddo can… let them!
