My Little Mama.
How, on earth did we come up with this name, Little Mama?
I mean, the child has been referred to, many-a-time, as her daddy’s doppalganger.
But we all know that passing down our traits doesn’t simply mean, our eye color, leg muscles (or lack thereof), and the predisposition for nearsightedness. More than that, it means those wonderful and not always so wonderful traits that make up our character – like our loud cackles, or our sweet tooth, and an affinity towards small fluffy things (especially the ones that bark). So as much as the world sees this little girl as the mini-me of her father… I see a lot of myself in her as well.
This child? She’s got my sass. That is for darn sure.
Little Mama’s love for asymmetry and chunky wool scarves… yup, that’s mine.
She also acquired my obsession for accessories, even if it means borrowing Auntie’s beloved LV that was in a size made just for her (don’t worry, it didn’t get much further than this shoot… I mean, a kiddo has no business with a Louis Vuitton ANYTHING).
She may be sassy and light for the most part, but sometimes Little Mama has moments of melancholy, particularly when she’s had enough. She tends to hold it in quietly, but you can tell in her body language she’s ready to peace out. I do have to say however, my tolerance for long photo shoots is far more impressive than hers.
Unfortunately, Little Mama has also developed a mild tendency to overbook and almost run late to virtually everything – so running in a panic from point A to point B to point Z – has become an essential part of our everyday.

But where my little Smallie is truly my Little Mama, is in her love for putting together an unexpected outfit. It’s not so much the end result, as it is the process of getting there. When I was about her age, I used to draw all my outfits and tape them on the wall. I would then mix and match the pieces according to what I was planning to wear that week. Sometimes it was a success, often – it was a downright fail. But I loved it, because it was exactly who I was – a planner, a coordinator, and beyond any doubt – a quirky dresser.
As far as this Little Mama and her outfit of the day is concerned, she had a little help – but only in the accessory department. She came up with the basics on her own. Not bad for a kiddo who really would rather jump in puddles all day than wearing princess heels and a crown (though, she’s been known to dabble in the world of royalty on more than one occasion…).
Aside from all that – Little Mama is far more than just my mini-me. She has developed a natural inclination to be a mom in her own right: A mom to her baby Bailey – whom she bathes, feeds, and corrects when she’s talking nonsense. A mom to her stuffy animals, often pretending to give them essential oils when they’re sick. A mom to her friends when she plays house at school. Sometimes she even steps up to the role as mom and referee when George and I have a heated discussion about who ate the last bag of chips (usually me, but that’s neither here, nor there…). Without any of my help, she has learned on her own, how important it is to be loving, nurturing, and supportive – even in her early years.
She has indeed earned the title, Little Mama.
And though she may be our family’s Little Mama, she’s darn proud to be her very own self. And we adore her for exactly who she is. Sassy, fashionably late, and wildly imaginative.
